Sensational is the only way to describe today. There was so much bait it wasn't funny and the salmon were ripping into it like there was no tomorrow. I found my first school tight in under a jetty. The residents were all screaming with excitement as I imagine they've never seen anything like it. One lady dropped a handline from her jetty and immediately hooked a nice salmon, burning her hands in the process...she was so excited which was great to see. My first cast to the school of "salmon" resulted in a nice little king! Just a rat, but great fun fighting him between jetties and mooring lines. After dispatching him, I landed a couple of salmon and also shared the school with another fly-fisher...Perhaps a resident here? The fish then moved slightly along the bank and were hitting bait hard against the beach. It was awesome to see the salmon going nuts in only inches of water. There were literally thousands of baitfish that ended up on the sand. One resident and I'll assume his grandson spent ages sweeping the baitfish back into the water! I'm not too sure the bait were to keen to get back there, but was great to see. Finished the day with a few tailor from the same area. Was talking to a bloke on a yacht, and he said you should have been this morning, there were heaps more fish...Wow. ]]>

First impressions of the rod are great, I was running an old airflo 8wt clear intermediate line on it and it seemed to cast really well even in the wild winds, and as far as fish fighting ability it was exactly what I was after to chase salmon, bonnies and tailor with. And as a nice way to top the day arrived home to find the crg2 reel I had also ordered, it seems slightly to small for the 7wt buy should suit its intended purpose fine. I really want to run a floating line on this setup any recommendations?CheersSaro]]>

Adam and I braved a marginal forecast this morning, but we were glad we did - big day on the surface stuff. Admittedly it was just bonnies and salmon as usual, but the average size of the bonnies was well up - they were 55cm fish rather than the 40-45cm fare that have become standard over the past season or so. And they were rather willing as well.Sambos were more their usual finniky selves, though there were certainly some rather impressively sized schools. And again, good sized fish.If you're umming and ahhing about the forecast for tomorrow, get out there. The fish are on]]>

Well it started wet and finished wetter. Started raining a bit after sunrise, drizzled on and off then a thunderstorm finished the job around 10.If you weren't out there, you didn't miss a great deal on the fishing front either. No sight of kings, a couple of smallish patches of sambos and a smattering of stupidly fussy bonnies holding tight in the naval zone. We got the string pulled a couple of times, but it certainly wasn't a champagne morning. I must say I've been a bit surprised how finiky the bonnies have been some mornings this season. Last year they pretty much ate anything that hit the water, today the hookups were few and far between - there were a dozen times I thought "well that's GOT to get eaten" and the fly proceeded to do nothing of the sort. I wasn't Robinson Crusoe either - I think there were 6 boats out there fly fishing (some 2 up) and the hookups when the bonnies were up could probably have been counted on 1 hand. ANyone else run into this?]]>

Not sure if it affected the #8 and lower but it was definately an issue on the #9 and #10. Believe the reason was that some of their running lines were breaking on big fish (Tarpon etc) so not sure if they did the same the their lower weights lines which were less likely to need beefing up.CheersMike]]>

One often sees threads about rod preferences but to my mind it is obviously the combination of Rod and line that counts (and personal preference of course). A classic example was the SAGE TCR #8 which I loaded with SA Striper Tapers and found difficult to use. Then received advice to load it with a Bonefish taper and bingo - awesome combination. For many years my beloved two piece RPLXI #9 and #10's loaded with SA Striper lines were my favourite combinations but Scientific Anglers then changed their Striper line formula and fattened up their running lines which changed the complete feel and suddenly made 2 awesome rods pretty bloody pedestrian no matter what weight line I tried - very frustrating. Fortunately I tried the RIO Outbound and it works perfectly so hopefully my old RPLXI's are now back in business. So If I had to rate my all time best Rod/line combinations it would go as follows:1. SAGE Z-Axis #5 loaded with a #6 Rio Aqualux line2. SAGE RPLXI #9 (2 Piece) loaded with SA Striper #10 (but the original line before they thickened up the running line)3. SAGE TCR #8 loaded with a SA #8 Bonefish Taper4. SAGE RPLXI #10 (2 Piece) loaded with RIO Outbound Hover #10 (37ft head)Oh and I should add, yes I am part of Team SAGE - something I thank the good Lord for each night when I say my prayers. :) But the intent of this post is not to push one rod type over another (I happen to only use SAGE) but rather to explore your all time favourite rod/line combinations - so what are yours?RegardsMike]]>

What fly were you using Greg? That SA bonefish has a long head and you need to get a fair bit of line aerialised to get it going. It doesn't carry a big fly well - but it isn't designed to. Also your 9 is a cannon - loomis GLX crosscurrent - and if you're using an outbound or similar on the 9, these are very aggressive tapers that lend themselves to quick long casts with minimal false casting - great for pelagics but not so great for presentation. So what you're saying doesn't surprise me at all in that context. Try a line with a more aggressive taper and maybe a smaller fly and you should get it flying.]]>

William/GregFor the #5 try the Rio Aqualux and I can promise you wont be dissapointed. For Bonnies and Salmon I have used a #5 SAGE Z-Axis loaded with a #6 Aqualux for this entire summer and it has fast become my favourite rod. Its actually a fresh water lake line but is perfect for salt as well. The beauty of the Aqualux is it shoots beautifully but still has all the characteristics and grace of a normal fly line with awesome gentle presentation. When I got the Z-Axis this was Morsies recommendation and he was spot on the money. Its avaible in everything from a #3 to an #8 so could suite for both your rods. I have the #6 on board so if you see me on the water come over and have a cast if you like. From memory the #5 on a #5 was just a little too light and gentle (trout like) and it needs to be uplined by 1 (but decide for yourself).I do however agree that the Outbound is also a great line and I am using the longer one (120 ft with 37ft head) on my #9 and #10. I have the Outbound hover which is between a floating and an intermediate and great for poppers. Casts a mile!! Loved it so much I have just bought the Outbound intermediate but havent had a chance to load it yet. Good luck.CheersMike]]>

The fish were located in the same spots that have been productive over the past few months. The fish are feeding on whitebait which made them really easy for a change. Not sure of the final counts, but landed approximately 6 tailor and about 10 bonito. The first few fish were taken on eyes, then I upgraded to a surf candy when I realised the prey were whitebait. I was chased off the water by a nasty looking front about 5:30 which doesn't seem to have hit.All up, a pleasing end to the day.]]>

As George says, a GOOD trailer lock, and if you have fancy rollers, make sure they don't' come off easily. I did have a complete trailer stollen from there, very inconvenient! It may be a bit more $$$ but the boat ramp at Bayview may be a better option.Bayview ramp is a little closer to the Basin - good camping facilities there, and easy to beach your boat in a reasonably protected position.]]>

There's a camping ground at Patonga and one at the Basin [Coasters Retreat/Pittwater] and those two are the only legal ones until you get up past Wisemans Ferry. There are two definitions for legal1. What is written in legislation and regulations, Park plans of management etc. and2. everything is legal until your caughtThere used to be a legal camping spot on a point on the southern side of Berowra Creek [true right bank] shortly after you enter the creek from the Hawkesbury, but NPWS ended that a decade ago ..... and there is a camp spot in behind Bar Island [elevated spot behind a little beach] that gets used infrequently.Looking at your target species, consider fishing the flats at the end of the bays within the Cowan system, overnight at the Basin [Coasters Retreat] and fish Pittwater/Broken Bay for pelagics early the next day, then the Careel Bay flats before fishing the bays in Cowan again on your return trip.If your leaving your car and trailer unattended overnight make sure you have anything of value out of your car and a good trailer lock as well.]]>

Thanks guys. My pterygium surgery was text book and after 2 weeks was healing brilliantly. Unfortunately on Thursday night I lost all sight in my left eye. A trip to Sydney eye hospital has confirmed a staph infection in the back of the eye. The infection is a total mystery because it makes almost no sense it came from pterygium surgery and may indeed have come from blood born problem. Anyway, its really rare and heads are being scratched. Depending on the doctor the prognosis of sight returning is anywhere from almost zero hope to full recovery, in other words, who knows? I must say that if they stick one more injection into my eyeball ill end up in a straight jacket cos the anaesthetic just plain won't work on an inflamed eye like this, it's pain you cannot imagine, beyond words.Sydney Eye Hospital and the staff would rate amongst the best IMHOMeantime I'll get out of here in a few days, get on with life and deal with whatever happens, it could be worse. Thanks for your thoughts guys JD]]>

Hello AllDon't know how many of you know. I haven't seen any posts on him so thought I would post here in case some of you haven't heard.Justin's surgery on his pterygium (had to check spelling) has gone a bit south and he developed an infection. The result is that he has temporarily (hopefully only) lost the sight in his left eye. He is currently in hospital having antibiotic shots into the eye to effect a cure but it is a slow and I imagine painful process. Not to mention he isn't getting out on the boat!I am lucky to be out with him for 4 days next week so we are both hoping he improves sufficiently for that and can take the charter without aggravating anything. As I think most of you would know him I thought I would let you know so you may wish him all the best with it and hope he recovers swiftly (not least of all 'cos I am looking forward to next week! )I have spoken to him and he was happy for me to post.CheersMax]]>

I thought I had finally got flyfishing in the harbour nailed. Went out on Saturday and amougst the flotilla of lure casters managed to catch a haul of salmon. Was tempted to buy a camera and to clean the carpet of my boat so that I could post pictures of the fish on the floor and post them on this site. However, went out again on Sunday morning and couldn't catch a thing. Loads of bonito in the regular spots but they weren't keen to play at all. Numerous fly changes and longer and lighter leaders didn't help.Cheers Anthony]]>

Having been an avid follower (but limited contributor) of the site since first getting out with Justin, I have tried to put the various pieces of advice provided to good use in fishing in the harbour and outside. However, my fishing so far this summer in the salt has been dismal (at best) and hardly a patch on the sport experienced last year. In order to remind myself of what it is like to catch fish on the fly, I took the opportunity to downsize and revert to the freshwater alternative, having been fortunate to be invited to try my hand on some privately accessible water in the Tuglow area. I was embarrassed at first to put up any photos of my trip, given the size of the fish landed (15 inches being the largest), especially in light of Mark's NZ photos of those monster kingfish. However, the brown trout caught were at least bigger than some of the Bass in Lionel's Nepean photos, so I thought I would give it a go!Great fun to get back to the basics of spotting and stalking rising fish (been struggling to spot them and/or stalk them in the harbour that is for sure!) and to realise the importance of an accurate cast and presentation. Small fish, small water, but great sport none-the-less. Now to get it right in the salt...Happy New Year to all.Bruce]]>
