I know that most fishos think that not much is being done on their behalves . The problem is that those who are doing something are run off their feet and don't have adequate resources to get the word out and publicise what is being done.Recently I attended a meeting with representatives from most [not all] recreational fishing bodies and a draft charter was drawn up to promote recreational angling in NSW. At the end of the day, and for very good reason, the RFA [Recreational Fishing Alliance] was nominated as the key spokesgroup to represent recreational angling in NSW.Malcolm Poole chairs the RFA and during the course of a discussion I had with him the other day, he identified that " Communication is the key, we need to get on top of all fishing issues and stop being the fire fighters all the time. Time, money and resources are the killers to this. "To provide an additional means of communication to anglers, another website I am substantially involved with has offered the RFA space on their website to promote their activities and this will hopefully develop over coming months. BTW the submission to which Justin refers I understand to largely be the work of Malcolm and Stan Kostantaris [RF Secretary and President ANSA] .Essentially the gut feel of the fishing bodies is that recreational fishing is under immense pressure from the green brigade who want nothing more than to lock us out of fishing grounds. Not newsworthy by itself, but the time to fight back and get a lead is NOW .... not in 6 months, not in the next year. Time is critical and if you have ever felt like doing something positive for your sport, do it NOW.If I can't fish, I'll go back to another sporting activity maybe golf, maybe target shooting or get myself a steed and a hound and chase foxes into the ground, whatever. I also have a day job to go to .....I am more than happy to relay information as it comes to hand although Malcolm might appreciate another direct means of communication should it be offered to him or some other assistance be it voluntary time or financial support.Complete the submission Justin has posted and send it in to the Inquiry ... although the timeframe in which to lodge is the 19h March, I understand that a [vertically challenged  ] website moderator has negotiated an extension of time to the 26th March. Do it NOW before you forget otherwise I'll see you on the first tee.]]>

Ahh, the anticipation sneaking up on harbour markers at sunrise. Watching William with fly rod in hand sizing up the shot and landing his offering perfectly alongside the marker, stripping his offering, a foamy popper across the calm water surface and watching an excited fiesty rat chase with surface bow waves gliding off his shoulders. Monstering and smashing and grabbing the fly 'til the hook set. Motoring the boat away slowly at hook up to put a little distance between fish and fad helping William do battle and land his fiesty rat.We fished on for the rest of the morning, but nothing could remove from my memory of that fiesty little rat.]]>

As you should all know, there is an Inquiry being held into Recreational Fishing in NSW. You should also know that submissions have been sought from all stake holders. To date, I am not filled with confidence that we as Recreational Anglers have done our bit and filed in a submission! Why have we left it so that other parties that claim they have a stake in our fishery can dictate to us where we can and can't fish? Why has it been left to people that don't even fish, to tell us what to spend our time on? Why the hell is there even a need for an enquiry? We should be all over this people! As recreational anglers we would be representative of at least 10% of the states population. Why have we left it to a little .5% minority to dictate to us what will happen with our waterways? Why do we continually let them pull the wool over our eyes? You should all be telling your mates to fill in submissions. And even fill one out for each member of your family that is of age and holds a stake in recreational angling! The government has even made it easy enough for us to submit on line. What more do you want? All you have to do is drop and drag the following pdf into your desktop hereand then go to the following link and add your details as well as adding the pdf you just saved to your desktop.recreational fishing submissionIf you care about fishing for you and your kids into the future then do this before 19th of March or we may lose it forever!! ]]>

Lots of options in Port Stephens. Most people think of the south side. Don't forget Hawks Nest. Nice golf course. Quite a few ramps into the Myall River. One of the places in Tea Gardens has a wharf you can tie your boat to. Some good options for bream and flatties in the river. Bit further to run to the main bay though. The longtail season is just starting there for the live baiters. I know people reckon they are not easy, too few and far between to catch on fly, but there is still a chance. I got a couple of shots only over a couple of days last time, but I still want to go back to have another go. Probably be better off going to HB for LTs though. ]]>

well they didn't particularly want our jigs on Sat, although that is the sort of sounding we have been getting when we have been getting stuck into the kings at that location.I will have to take the 5th amendment regarding fly selection :)I don't know if this warrants it own thread, but I'm really keen to get better at interpreting sounder images. I think I'm starting to recognise kings now, I know people say they can recognize different sorts of bait, leatherjackets etc I would be very interested in seeing some screen grabs with descriptions.I get a screen shot whenever I hit mark - which is usually when I hook something or see something. Here's a couple more from a well known reef near south head. The first one is probably my favourite sort of show - fish not bait (although there is a bait ball bottom right), and spread throughout the water column at all sorts of different angles, which suggests a lot of activity. Stacked up parallel arches often don't yield anything.Same place or near enough, fish around a small bait ball. Again we caught dropping through this.and as a quiz question - what sequence of events is recorded here? :)JD - what frequency are you running on your downward sonar? I have been on 200 which gives a pretty small view of the bottom - just started merging with the 83, too early to make a judgement yet.I have ordered the thru hull puck transducer and Y cable connector so I will get my downward thru hull (SI from the transom mount). Should mean I get bottom on the plane, which will be good for finding new ground - at speed :)]]>

I am a Troutie turned Saltie. Boys stick to the long wand and leave the Jig gear for the kids. While in Tas for work 18 months ago I went to Brumbies creek and had a fish, I found a "big old healthy girl" and went to work 20 mins later she left her lie and rose to my fly. Normally my heart would pound and the adrenalin would zing, but no. I remember distinctly feeling oh no stop, dont. Now I did lift the fly off the water perfectly in time with the strike and I was on. All I wanted to do was get her off the line with as little damage as possible. What,s all this go to do with Big Kings. Not considering dinner. Well its sport, camaraderie, companionship, friendship and definitely the challenge. There is no doubt that the Kings represent a very real challenge, a genuine contest. I think more so than anything fresh. But only on light lines, the schools of kings early this season where as difficult as you could possibly want and on 8wt 12 lb combo were a hell of a fight. The thrill of hooking up after ten Fly changes and a thousand casts was fantastic. I did not mind loosing a fish ,getting them to bite was what it was all about. The biggest part of the challenge being getting the fish to strike. So big Kings, I have been busted by the bigger ones. Blind fishing of any type does not in thrall me, I become bored almost immediately. That's why I love fishing Sydney so much, you get to see the adversary, and the heart pounds. A popper at dawn, swirl, cast again I am sure the heart rate monitor would be at max.Dropping really heavy weighted leaders down 30 m, is lucky dip fishing, no wonder the long wand is giving way to the mindless bobbing up and down of the ..... jig. Why not try and bring them up to the Boat?I am in Perth for the next two weeks so no fishing for a while, keep up the reports, and above all else tight lines. :P ]]>

I found he went deep but then as I was fighting him I also put the boat in gear and slowly went to deeper water and away from the structure, he came out like a puppy being led on a lead and the fight re-continued then. Had another 80 cm + fish last year on a charter, but the guide doesnt believe in nets and lost him at the boat...heart breaking  ]]>

Guys, like justin said if you can get there head pointing up you can control fish more easily. I have hooked 80cm kings at the side of the boat lifted their heads up and they never got an inch under the water. not recommended by the way becuse they go nuts in the boat!!!The problem with jigging in shallow water is you can't get any angle on the fish. they will win every time. Also you are running braid which has zero give. when jigging in deeper water you almost always have some angle down there...next time out get a guy on the throttle..when hooked up hit about 4knots and get some angle on them..this has worked well for me in the past...this is probably the fly rodders can get them up on lighter tippets...you usually have angle to work with when the fly line sinks....cheersbrent]]>

We are running 10kg of drag on reels that can support 22kg, 75cm fish are not taking any line at all - 90's are, and the stuff we are not landing are pulling line at will. On that basis 10kg will snap like cotton - bear in mind with a knot you've basically got 7kg of strength there. Most of the bigger ones we've hooked have been within a couple of winds of the bottom - really cranking up drags has been resulting in pulled hooks, so its a question of lock up then back off as it comes up.As far as I know all of the really decent GT's landed on fly have been on the flats, which is a totally different proposition to rought ground, especially when the fish is already deep.My experience of bigger GT's on fly is one lost due to a snafu whilst my mate landed his at 12kg - they were hooked from a school where the fish were peas on a pod up in Weipa so I mine was a similar sort of size. It was in open water and a decent tussle but these fish recently have been the hardest hitting & fighting fish I have ever hooked. The only way to settle this is course is to land that meterey on 10kg fly - whether or not it happens I'm sure it will be a lot of fun trying! :)]]>

Btw, I'm not that interested in the igfa side of things and often fish 30lb such as for jewies but most flylines break at 35 so I don't go over 30. I just think there's not enough guys giving these bigger kings a go on fly and if more of us did then there would be more meter fish caught on fly, there's plenty this year and the deep ones will be the best shot, the inshore ones have a lot more structure]]>

Yep I hear you on a lot of that mark but you can't break 20 lb through a fly rod so what can you do with 60 lb that you can't do with 20lb apart from take the rod out of the equation and use it as a hand line. Noddy (Craig Radford) and Morsie landed sampsons in 10 meters of water to 100lb on 20 lb. You saw me get a fish at the colours on a 9wt around 90cm which never took a cm of line on 20 lb tippet and a 16 wt would have messed it right up. I don't disagree with what you say entirely I just think 20lb tippet has not really been explored by most flyfisherman to the extent it could be. I think you need a he'll of a lot of luck on 20 with a bigger king but a meter fish is very, very catchable on 20lb. I know anglers landing 30 lb gts on 80lb braid and the fish doesn't take an inch off the reel so our meter long kings should struggle on 80 lb braid too.]]>

Justin,The big fish that did me last week on 60lb leader with 50 lb braid gave me no chance on that gear-let aloneon 20lb gear.If you hook them up high then they can run and you can tire them out.Down deep is a different story! Every king I've hooked down deep knows only one way to go-down.Anything is possible on 20lb if theGods and Planets are aligned-but not too often. Those guys in the recent Flylife said the same-20 lb forget it.I've been on so many big fish trips where IGFA followers adhere to the rules (10kg only) and these good flyfishermen never land a fish.I have often thought the ridiculous 10 kg tippet rule for saltwater records was made by leather arm patched fishermen who have never hooked a big fish.If you hook a big clean fighting fish down deep such as a 25kg+ tuna and if you are fortunate to tire it out down deep-its virtually impossible to lift it's dead weight up without the line breaking as well on 10kg.I have heard on good authority that many of the so-called flyfishing records on 10kg consist of teased up fish;hooked at the boat;and gaffed straight away-great sportfishing!Cheers Mark]]>

Great fish Matt, really fun on any gear. There's a bunch that size inside too but so close to structure makes it hard. I don't think you need to fish 60 lb on fly. If you pull a 90cm kings head upward on 20lb tippet it can only swim up. The key is to keep the fish heading up and never let it turn deep. Red line and a bit of luck will do it on fly. My mate Tony was all over those 85cm fish last week, they never stood a chance, he would have had my bet on a meter fish no worries. The world record is over 25kg from the rocks on 10kg. I honestly think most guys are barely running 5kg of drag on their jig gear and you can double that on fly. Big fish on fly or jig are good fun regardless and matts been putting in the hard yards,JD]]>

hey Mark - we went out again today first to the usual haunt where I got 5 to the jig all pretty decent again including one in the mid eighties. We then went wide and I got another couple on the jig in deeper water one an 85. Then we went and got some livies and went back out wide - I got this 92 pictured on a yakka (returned) - yes there has been a bit of an edit to the background - it went very well indeed. However the next two drifts we both hooked up and both lost our fish - the first one I lost was without doubt the biggest kingy I have ever hooked - and it was hot on the heels of the 92 on the same gear so I had something to compare it to - it stayed deep with the rod bent to below the waterline, I was sweating and I thought I was winning for a while - the head shakes were really ponderous, like one every 2 seconds. Anyway to cut a long story short it did me, then my mate got done his rod tip actually hit the water while it was in the rest and he didn't get it out of the holder. Next drift pretty much the same happened to me, I was simply unable to get my rod out of the holder with the drag setting on the tld, and the braid actually cut on my trim tab edge. Then my mate hooked up - he was winning for a while on heavy gear but the same story. This is the same place we had the 94 and 105 last week there are some leviathans around but I just don't know how we are going to land them!!]]>

March 2, 16, 30 April 13, 27 May 11, 25 June 8, 22 (March 2 is booked out already)It's free to join in but you must be registered prior as numbers are limited for each session. After talking with the Park Management, i have been playing with the idea of maybe holding a closed session for only those registered on this site - if there is enough interest. Let me know as we could maybe have it on a weekend to help out others who can't make it during the week. Also, you would be able to bring the kids if they are over the age of 7.]]>

Mark - be interested to hear about your technique once you've refined it - its not attaching your fly to a downrigger clip is it? 8) I was out with greg yesterday and we hooked about a dozen fish and got I think 8 kings to the boat - nothing huge and actually two of those 'kings'w ere amberjacks that went well for their size. A couple of the kings were probably legal size, plus I lost something much better early on.I was inspired by watching the guys in the yellow boat cleaning up - they were landing a much better stamp of fish as well for some reason.Popped out this morning for a dawn raid - cracking session early at the usual haunt with a dozen kings all legal and most over 80. We then went a bit wider to a small patch of reef and the guy I was with got a 105 first drop followed by a 94 (pictured) and a little rat which was the only non-legal of the day. Incredible stuff so close to Sydney and there has been some real consistency over the last few weeks. We did keep a few today but released more than we kept. We were back at the ramp at 9.20.]]>

Hey Sam - not sure I can see the merit in trying to finesse it for kings, unless you particularly get a kick out of the light line thing or you feel you are not getting hits because they are leader shy. I would be sticking with at least 20 straight thru, preferably more frankly as if you hook into something like Martin caught last week you are going to have to get very lucky indeed to land it anywhere near structure. And there does seem to be a few of those sort of stamp fish around at the moment! :)]]>

Wasn't going to make that mistake again.I can only imagine how hard the 100cm jobs must go, Matt, and I agree how there is a exponential increase in pulling horse power once you step above 'rat' class.Good to share this moment with a fishing mate who you can recall the story with and they can relate. Not to mention the expert landing that was employed. First shot - no miss!!! And I didn't even "gently" instruct him not to mess it up - a luxury not always aforded a fishing mate who is about to land a PB fish for you. You have to bear in mind we don't have the estuary species here you guys get so our esturay fishing doesn't end to be that productive over all. The Harbour itself does get good Kahawai and king-fish workups, silver trevally and snapper are also there though I do tend to target them outside the harbour more. There are kings on the flats in some of the estuaries but they are hard to find on the land side as the bottom is predominantly silt/mud making spotting difficult... on the Island side however it is primarily white sand and does make it easier. My biggest king on fly there went 12kg in 25m of water. With the heavier leader the 12 wt had plenty of grunt and was up to the task. I share your concern of holding the braid to control the fish-you could get a serious cut in your hand! I always try to get big beasts on the reel as soon as possible.Cheers Mark]]>
Well done Matt ...... nice touch with the rod too. I expect next week it will be on live bait or squid strips
Hey George - I might as well come clean. There's been a bit of that going on as well :? The new boat has a livewell and it needed testing :) Its nice to mix it up a bit and apparently jigging for kings is a bit of a winter pursuit, so maybe that wait for the salmon won't seem quite so long this year 8) ]]>
You can actually hold a fish like that on fly without loosing any line so it's as good a chance if not a better bet on the long wand, well done
yeah - maybe - I have to say this thing went like stink, it was taking line against some very serious drag, very quickly! The problem is, if you could even get your fly to where I hooked this fish there is a very good chance you would be stripping with your backing and I wouldn't want to take a wrap of that and try and stop one of these :)]]>

I'm off for a cold shower to wash your heathen philistine germs off.But secretly I'm jealous and suggest it may be a fine capture on any gear. You can actually hold a fish like that on fly without loosing any line so it's as good a chance if not a better bet on the long wand, well done]]>

I ran into JD this morning near the harbour bridge as he was heading off to meet his client - I have to admit to feeling somewhat unclean as he gave me some solid fly tips - I couldn't bring myself to admit that I hadn't even packed a flyrod this morning  I was off to try out my new jigging stick - 65lb braid and a massive spin reel - did the business for me outside the harbour this morning with 3 landed including my new PB king at 99cm and 8kg - it went like an absolute train and I rather suspect that even if I could have secured the hookup on fly, I never would have landed it!sorry for posting the image of a devil's implement, but it had to be done :D ]]>
