Well guys went out this morning and found the salmon and bonnies, it was a marvellous morning.I began with the size 10 "more hook than fly" fly....deadly again, but it is hard to get a good connection with such a small hook. I was using a 6 wt 6 lb tippet combo today and they toyed with me until I added some tippet grunt and moved to a bigger fly. Having seen the gurgler get smacked in Justins video I swiched and while much less effective it was great to see the take.I focused special attention onto what they were eating this morning and saw exactly what it was. The ultra small silver fly is so good because it matches the hatch almost perfectly. The bait are no more than 2 cm and silver, thinner than spaghetti. Sambos on a 6 with a light tippet just great. I have to find a sharper stronger size 10 hook :D ]]>

well done Tim. A 6 would have been fun on the salmon, bonnies too! I had a frenzied session out there the other day, salmon had garfish cornered in a little cove and smashing them right on the rocks. I thought they were on small pillies or something, but one of them spewed up a gar of about 8 cms long. There was something else with them too, not sure if they were bonnies, could of been, but they were jumping out ot the water and I hooked a few but lost them. Salmon, as usual were heaps of fun.]]>

Went out yesterday for a flick of the 6wt since the 9 is broken. Straight to the secret (ha-ha) salmon spot and got a few salmon, a trevally and a bonito. What was the bonito doing in this cool water? This is the earliest in the season I've caught one. I thought it was tailor biting off a few flies but I guess it was bonnies. There was a pod of dolphins at middle head and a seal in the heads. Mayhem everywhere. The salmon have been a bit quiet this last week but I saw a school off Queenscliff on Tuesday and they were back on yesterday.See you out there, Tim]]>

The only orther things I have fixed in 5 years is a leaking livebait hose and I replaced the steering cables which had become very stiff and corroded so that's not bad I guess.I am afraid I am not a seller at the moment.CheersPatrick]]>

I didn't get a hook-up.We caught a heap of assorted species on bait including a beaut flounder. The guys had a great time. "The best Sunday I've had for a long, long time" was Rubens quote while enjoying a few beers and the 'wildlife' at the Manly Pier Hotel afterwards. I had a great morning on the Salmon at North Head yesterday. There was an early sunrise bite out the front that finished by about 7:30. I was a bit late for this and only got 1 salmon (I blame Don's party). MJ was there early and got 4 I think. I then waited around for a couple of hours and by 9:30 the wind was dropping and the tide was running out and they started working just inside the corner. I had 2 hours with no other boat there and I caught as many fish as you can catch in 2 hours. Constant hookups and fights then back to do it again. And amazingly for a Sunday no one seemed to notice or join me (very few birds on them). Pete White arrived just as I was leaving. They wanted small flies and light leader (10lb). If any of you have been to Justin & Morsie's casting day you would have seen the demonstration about how hard it is to put real pressure through a bent flyrod. I did the experiment on the 10lb tippet (through a Sage 9wt TCR) yesterday trying to break off a fish. You can do it but I was amazed how hard you can go on a fish with just 10lb on. You only want to play experiments like that on days when you have caught too many fish!Sorry no pics - but you know what a blue sky, North Head, calm water, school of salmon and a bent flyrod look like by now!Patrick]]>

Hi Justin, it casts well, well enough for me anyhow and with the type of fishing I use with this method a 20-30 ft cast is enough but alot of the time the fish are caught just under the boat. No finesse needed. As for length the Central Coast guys are using 1 ft to 3 ft sink tips for their blackfishing, but not long casts needed there either. G'day guys, went out at 6 am and the wind was'nt too bad, but it quickly picked up. Got round the front and there were already a couple of boats casting to salmon, so I thought, looking good. I had my 8 wt with an intermediate shooting head and an old candy that is at least 2 years old and has a tattered tail but it still produces. First drift into them and had three good strikes, but dropped all of them after about 10 seconds, checked the fly and it was ok and the hook was sharp. Then next drift hooked up first cast and into the fat salmon in the picture, ended up getting about 5 and then they went down by 7.30. I went to Trev Ally and started burleying up, it was quiet for about 15 minutes and I thought it was going to be slow, but after what has been lately the first fish caught there the last 5 visits, a smelly pike, the trevs came on and as with past visits, a small king as well this one was 57 cms and fun on the 5 wt, what joined in the fun today were 3 sargent bakers which included quite a large one that pulled hard. I have been using the 5 wt with a T14 at this spot lately and its been great fun, today I caught over 25 trevs it was almost a fish a cast for awhile, not huge, but mostly in the 30 - 40 cms range, kept a couple for sashiimi and curries. Th e clouser in the pic has caught at least 50 trevs lately and still looks good! On the way back in it was blowing about 30 knots and there was a school of salmon at the Heads, but it was too windy to even think about it. Had a good day anyway.]]>

Went out to battle a few sambo's in the wind today. I landed a few after a rocky start where I broke my beautiful Redington cps. It's now a 5 piece. The break was unusual in that the salmon went deep and I had it reasonably under control, was going hard on it, then I felt a bump thru' the line and the salmon appeared to put on 50 kilos. Snap bang, a horrible sound. Despair. Anyway pulled out the 6 wt spare and all was good. Thanks for the tip on fly size Sam. See you out there soon.Tim]]>

Well it was just too good to stay at my desk.Seabreeze said it all, the tide on the out and wind sooooft. So out for some afternoon delightWhat no boats out must be Tuesday, or no fish.Well there were heaps of sambos a great hour and a half.I i=used a 4 cm eye with some success but when I changed to a very small eye it was a "fish per cast" until I was busted off. Then dark. This fly is small indeed 2 cm at best with a no 10 hook. I had trouble hooking up I don't think the small hook helps and with 6 lb tippet I was a bit timid sinking the hook. I would like to find a 10 which was really strong, any suggestions. If you look hard in this shot you will see the school and the tight line. Good photos are hard by yourself, when you have to have glasses on to see in the viewfinder while fighting the fish on 6 lb. All this while staying in the boat. Better with 2 people.Fantastic arvo]]>

Thanks guys for the feedback. I just returned to Texas from my first trip to Sydney. WOW...what a great city. And the Pubs....awesome. Never met a bunch of friendlier people. I toured around a bit just taking in the sites and saw a number of jetties along the shore. Is the fishing worthwhile from these jetties? The problem I have with booking a guided trip (aside from the cost) is the fact that I arrive at the Hotel (4 Seasons) at around 1030 AM. By the time I check in and stow my bags, it doesn't really leave more than half of the day for other activities. Anyway, even if the layover doesn't offer any fishing opportunities, I still love the city....Did I mention the pubs? I don't know what the availability of gear is like in Sydney....I would be more than willing to carry over things like flylines, hooks, and other tackle (as long as it is not illegal) in exchange for a pint at a local pub. Seriously, I would love to meet some of you guys and share some lies.]]>

Sam is right, Justin is the best bet. The quality of the land based fishing in the harbour is not a patch on the boat based stuff. If you are not going to get full day here, it could be a bit harder. If you are staying in the city, then you could get a few hours on a sandflat in Rose Bay, but the targets will be different. You'd be unlikely to encounter Salmon or kings there, more likely Bream, Tailor, Whiting or Flathead. Still good fun though, but dependent on season, tides etc. Not sure how they are fishing at the moment. Will you get a full morning or afternoon? What day will it be?If you're gear has only been used in Saltwater, then there should not be a problem, it all depends on where you fly in from. If it has been used in freshwater, especially in a didymo infected area, then it will be quarantined. Commercial flies should be OK, but there are never any guarantees. Best to check with Australian Customs.]]>

JustinThanks for putting this up. I have been doing my bit on email trying to distribute the various pieces I get but its great to have them up here. I think anyone who values their fishing freedom and is considering voting labour or greens really need to have a re-think as the consequences are pretty scary.Nobody is for one moment suggesting we shouldn't be caring for our precious resource (hell I take about 1 fish a year and if you had tasted my wifes fish you would know why!) but there are other ways to manage the fishery through bag limits, size limits and far better enforcement of the laws rather than massive green zones. The vast majority of fisherman I know do the right thing but there are always a few that will keep undersize fish/exceed bag limits and I for one would be quite happy to see the penalties and policing increase 10 fold to simply make it non-viable to even contemplate. Thanks again for highlighting the matter.CheersMike]]>

<![CDATA[All FISHERMAN - you must read this]]> JUSTIN D replied on 11/08/2010:
The biggest problem with the Greens marine Park proposal is the fact that it is based on a fear campaign aimed at general populous who have not the faintest clue that most of what is being touted is pure nonsense and has absolutely ZERO scientific merit. Senator Brown used a scientific paper published in 2003 by Meyers and Worm which has been so widely discredited by the scientific community it is in my opinion "a Joke". The Meyers and Worm paper is also based mainly around pelagic fishes and the Japanese Longline fishery, its got almost no parallels to our fishery.......... But don't believe me, check out what Walter Starck PHD had to say on the issue of Marine Parks (see Walters credentials below the article, this guy knows what he's talking about!!)10 Aug 2010By Walter Starck PhDThe recent policy announcement by the Coalition regarding Marine Protected Areas is a hopeful first step in the direction of a return to environmental reality and away from political pandering to the eco delusions of the Greens. It is important to recognise a few home truths regarding MPAs:They are a costly hypothetical solution to a problem which doesn’t exist. They have no effect on pollution or climate change and the possibility of overfishing is already more than adequately addressed by the most costly and restrictive fisheries management in the world. There is no threat to marine biodiversity. We have never lost even one marine species from any human cause and none are threatened with extinction. The Law of the Sea Treaty under which we claim EEZ rights provides that other nations may petition to access our resources if we are not utilising them. It would be difficult for Australia to sustain an argument that vast no-take MPAs are a “use” of fisheries resources.Holders of fishing rights have committed to large investments in both money and years of their lives on the assurance that their rights were, secure, permanent and tradeable. Their licenses are in fact a contract with government and the terms and conditions of their rights cannot be legally changed without either their full knowledge and individual consent under contract law, or fair and just compensation. The Biodiversity Treaty which has been cited as requiring the declaration of MPAs, also requires that traditional uses be protected. Recreational and commercial fishing are traditional uses going back to first settlement by both indigenous and colonial peoples. At present, no need for or benefit from, extensive MPAs has been shown to exist and it would be prudent to await the accumulation of further knowledge to implement them over time in accord with increasing knowledge. Current scientific understanding is simply not adequate for a soundly based large scale implementation of MPAs at this time. The crash program of MPA implementation amounts to large scale environmental meddling with no proper assessment of either needs or consequences. It is simply cheap pandering for green votes.Over recent years numerous large scale clinical and epidemiological studies published in the world’s leading medical journals have found significant health benefits from increased seafood consumption for a broad range of neurological, cardio-vascular and immune related conditions. Translated into reduced health care costs, it could save Australia billions of dollars per year not to mention the improved quality of life for millions of Australians. We need to be looking at how to expand our underutilised fisheries and aquaculture potentials, not seeking to find more imaginary reasons to close them down.Fisheries have by far the lowest impact of any form of food production. To replace global fisheries production with beef would require conversion to grazing of an area about 15 times larger than the whole of Australia.Beyond the matter of fisheries management, ill-conceived environmental restrictions have become a major impediment to almost any productive activity involving use of land or natural resources. An expansion of the Coalition’s MPA policy to offer a similar rethink on excessive environmental restrictions in general as well as a strengthening of property rights would strike an overwhelming chord of popularity. The anti ETS sentiment in the electorate which was the propelling force for the Coalition’s change of leadership and public approval is but an exposed seam. A motherlode of resentment against environmental nonsense is just beneath the surface and a rousing chorus of agreement awaits only a leader willing to say that this emperor not only has no clothes, he is disgusting. The political pandering for green votes at the expense of the livelihood of thousands of fishing families and the health of millions of persons.Walter Starck,10 August 2010About Walter StarckWalter Starck grew up on, an island in the Florida Keys. If you want to have any water left to fish you must read this. PLEASE don't sit around and say it wont happen because its ABSOLUTELY going to happen if we vote Labour or the greens. Spread the word, I have spent the last few days telling everyone I can, so spread the word and DO NOT VOTE LABOUR OR THE GREENS or our wonderful sport of fishing will be impacted if not banned forever.Below is a letter from Doug Joyner of AFTA (Australian Fishing Tackle Association) with some critical links and attachments including how to vote, you need to read.Dear Member,All is not well for industry as we head towards a Critical Federal Election! We have been advised that Labour Are Preferencing the Greens and we have the Greens wanting and announcing that they want 30%? Of Australia’s waters closed to extractive uses i.e. Recreational Fishing. This political football again will be at Industry expense and if you take time to think about it, disastrous for rec fishing let alone your business. To fight this AFTA has acted where it can to get the message out there including a Television campaign focused on Marginal seats. The TVC can be viewed on U Tube.
